DAY 2, 7 MAY 2022, ST KATHERINE’S CHURCH IN GDAŃSK
Day two of the Festival will again feature a combination of brand new music commissioned by the festival organisers with compositions that have already gained recognition among critics, performers and audiences.
In the first part of the concert, the Polski Chór Kameralny will perform a selection of a cappella pieces by Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-2020) and Andrzej Koszewski (1922-2015). Conducted by Jan Łukaszewski, Polski Chór Kameralny was the first in the world to record the complete set of pieces for choir a cappella by Krzysztof Penderecki, for which the ensemble received Orphée D’or awards from the Academie du Disque Lyrique in 2010 and 2014.
The second part of the concert will feature “Regina Coeli” for choir and chamber orchestra by Aleksandra Chmielewska (1993), who graduated from the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, having studied composition under Prof. Paweł Łukaszewski. The composer, who is also a writer, has won several awards and honourable mentions, including 1st Prize at the Transatlantyk Instant Composition Contest for her piano improvisation to a film [2015], at the Patri Patriae International Composers’ Competition for “Ad Te Levavi” for female choir and chamber orchestra [2018] and at the International Andrzej Koszewski Composition Competition for “Verbum Caro” for mixed choir a cappella [2017].
Aleksandra Chmielewska will write a piece called “Regina Coeli” for choir, two violins, viola, percussion and oboe, specially commissioned by the Festival. Thus, it will be the world premiere of the new piece by the young composer.
